CBDa Isolate

CBDa is the acidic precursor to the decarboxylated and more commonly known and used form, CBD. CBDa has been found to have medical benefits reported anecdotally from users. CBDa Isolate is a crystalline THC-free powder of CBDa that has had all the fats, waxes, lipids, oil, chlorophyll, and other plant material removed to create a highly purified powder from the isolated CBDa molecule.

The benefit of working with the isolated form of CBDa is a higher concentration of the compound in formulations although we highly recommend including more of the plant’s phytochemistry in your final formulation by adding CBD Distillate or CBD Live Resin. Research shows that cannabinoids are more effective when consumed with a wider range of the plant’s compounds. By using CBDa Isolate in conjunction with CBD Distillate or CBD Live Resin, the CBDa content of the final product can be boosted while still offering increased therapeutic potential.

CBDa Isolate is ideal for use in tinctures, oils, topicals, capsules, soft gels, sublingual sprays, creams, edibles, gels, shampoo, lotion, cosmetics, soaps, beverages, and vape pens. The important consideration is the solubility of the powder in your final product. We also offer water-soluble CBD Isolate. Please contact us if you have questions about formulations and ordering. We recommend not formulating it into products exposed to heat or oxygen for extended periods as it decarboxylates the CBDa to CBD.

HIGHLY REFINED CBDa CONCENTRATE

CBDa Isolate is the most refined CBDa concentrate option you can find making it ideal for product formulations where a high potency is desired. The CBDa Isolate we offer is extracted in a highly controlled environment and processed to cGMP standards to guarantee industry-leading purity and consistency.

CBDa ISOLATE USES

CBDa isolate is a great option for highly regulated markets where there is consumer demand for alternative medicine and plant-based solutions but where THC is not allowed legally. Since it is the purest form of CBDa it contains the least amount of THC possible. CBDa Isolate is also ideal for those with THC intolerance. Some people cannot or choose not to consume THC making CBD Isolate the best choice for their needs since it contains the least amount of THC. CBDa Isolate is nearly THC-free except in trace amounts that are undetectable by most testing equipment. It has also been found to have unique benefits beyond what other cannabinoids can offer and is a highly recommend input for therapeutic formulations targeting anxiety and coronavirus aid.

It is the key ingredient for some of the industry’s most recognized products and brands and is found most commonly in tinctures, oils, topicals, capsules, soft gels, sublingual sprays, creams, edibles, gels, shampoo, lotion, cosmetics, soaps, beverages, and vape pens.

We recommend using it to boost CBDa levels in products that are also formulated with CBD Distillate or Live Resin rather than formulating with it on it’s own. This is because studies show a fuller plant spectrum to be more therapeutically beneficial.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CBDa ISOLATE

Can I use CBDa Isolate in any product?

Depending on the desired final product texture and other how the Isolate will be integrated into the product. it may or may not be the best input. CBDa Isolate would not homogenize with water for example and water-soluble CBDa would be needed (which we sell, contact us for details).

Is CBDa Isolate THC Free?

CBDa Isolate is considered THC-free due to its purity. There may still be non-detectable trace amounts of THC present but it is still considered to be free of THC.

HOW CBD ISOLATE IS MADE

Step 1: Extraction

All concentrates begin with the process of extraction and this includes CBD Isolate. There are different hydrocarbon solvents including butane, propane, and ethanol. Ethanol is the most commonly used solvent for the production of CBD Isolate as it has one of the highest throughputs.

Step 2: Winterization

Winterization is the process of removing the fats, waxes, and chlorophyll from the initial extract. If these compounds weren’t removed, it would lower the percentage and purity of the CBD Isolate.

To achieve winterization the extract is cooled down to sub-zero temperatures with a solvent. By maintaining the extract in the chilled environment for a period of time, the lipids (fats and waxes) coagulate and separate from the crude oil – which is known as ‘miscella’.

Step 3: Filtration

Once winterization has been completed, the fats and waxes that coagulated from the miscella are removed. A filter press and vacuum pump pull the unfiltered miscella mixture through a series of filter plates to separate the fats, waxes, and other compounds into one vessel while the now-filtered miscella is in another.

Step 4: Decarboxylation

In order to achieve the highest CBD content, decarboxylation must be performed. The process of decarboxylation is to convert carboxylic acid and CO2 from cannabinoids present in the cannabis extract which means CBDa is converted into CBD, its neutral form. Converting the acidic cannabinoid CBDa to its neutral form of CBD ensures the highest purity.

Step 5: Distillation

Now that our extract has been winterized, filtered, and decarboxylated, we can perform distillation. Both short path and wiped film distillation equipment can be used for this step. With the wiped film method, the extract is loaded under vacuum into a tank where it passes by a heated plate.

As the oil is heated it enters a secondary chamber with spinning wipers that create a thin film around the heated, jacketed chamber. After this the heated liquid enters a long condensing coil where it is cooled with fluid and recondenses the vapors back to liquid form.

In the final step of this process the CBD oil which is referred to as the ‘main body’ is collected separately from the terpenes, volatiles and higher boiling point cannabinoids which are known as ‘heads’ and ‘tails’.

Step 6: Crystallization

In this final step, manufacturers change the structure of the CBD Isolate is to subject it to a crystallization process. This process results in a final product that is still the purest form of CBD but with a crystalline structure.

This crystallization process begins by placing the CBD oil into a large reactionary vessel, with a stirring mechanism attached. The mixture is heated while constantly stirred. Slowly after some time, the temperature is lowered and the rate of stirring is slowed down. Once the mixture has cooled and nucleation starts to occur which is the initial stage of crystallization, the stirring rate is drastically increased, which causes the crystals to separate from the solution.

After this, the crystals are rinsed with pentane, or other chemical solvents, to remove any remaining unwanted impurities.

BENEFITS OF CBDa

Cannabidiolic acid, commonly referred to as CBDa, was first isolated back in the 1950’s. Following the isolation of the CBDa compound, not much more happened in spite of increased research with CBD in general during the 1990’s and 2000’s.

Cannabidiolic acid is a potent serotonin 5-HT1A agonist. CBDa is a more potent agonist of the 5-HT1A receptor compared to CBD. CBDa has demonstrated about 100x greater affinity for the 5-HT1A receptor compared to CBD, allowing much lower doses. This could mean increased aid for the things affected by this receptor including nausea, vomiting and anxiety, but clinical trials are lacking and more research is needed.

Most of the current research has been done on animals, not humans but shows suppressed acute nausea and vomiting when combined with low doses of THC. Similar reductions in nausea have also been seen with intra-gastric dosing (which is the equivalent of oral dosing in humans).

Promising results were also seen in animal models of anticipatory nausea, which tends to occur in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. CBDA alone had an effect at doses as low as 0.5 ug/kg and as low as 0.1 ug/kg when combined with other anti-nausea medications, such as ondansetron, metoclopramide, and THCA. CBDA has also been studied in models of anxiety since activation of the 5-HT1A receptor is a validated anti-anxiety mechanism. The effect of CBDA on anxiety behavior of mice was largest in the presence of a stressor. CBDA did little to unstressed mice, but had a very potent anti-anxiety effect (at 0.1 ug/kg) when mice were stressed.

For comparison, CBD generally has an anti-anxiety effect in mice starting at around 1 mg/kg (although it highly depends on the study design). CBDA is is showing an effect at a dose that is 10,000 times lower! CBDa has also shown activity in rodent models of depression. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.  This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

CBDa has several other activities besides activating the 5-HT1A receptor although none of these are necessarily unique:

•CBDa inhibited anandamide cellular uptake.

•CBDa acted weakly at TRPA1 and TRPM8.

•CBDa had in vivo anti-hyperalgesia and anti-inflammatory effects through TRPV1. CBDA may also synergize with low-dose THC for these effects. None of these activities are unique to CBDA.

•CBDa selectively inhibited the COX-2 enzyme with an IC50 of around 2 μM. Although this study has been frequently cited to support an anti-inflammatory effect, this isn’t particularly potent. Plus another study contradicted it, showing no significant COX-2 inhibition. Plus selective COX-2 inhibitors already exist anyways.

•CBDa reduced COX-2 expression in breast cancer cells through down-regulation of the c-fos transcription factor. It also inhibited migration of breast cancer cells through a mechanism independent of COX-2. However, other studies have shown little effect of CBDA on cancer cell growth.

Advantages of Increased CBDA Potency

It is fair to ask what is the advantage of CBDA having better potency vs. CBD? Many people misunderstand the pharmacological term potency. Having higher potency does not mean that it necessarily works better, but rather that it exerts its effect at a lower dose.

So why would it matter that you could give CBDA at a lower dose if it is doing the same thing as CBD? Clinical studies have shown that CBD has an acute anti-anxiety effect (i.e. after a single dose), but the dose needs to be relatively high – around 300 mg. If results from animals translate to humans, we could potentially be using low milligram (or even sub-milligram) doses of CBDA. Obviously the appropriate dose would need to be confirmed in clinical trials, but let’s assume that CBDA works at 1 mg.

  • This would potentially be much less expensive (300 mg doses of CBD are cost prohibitive for most people)
  • Oral absorption would potentially be more rapid and consistent (CBD quickly reaches solubility limitations in gastric fluid that can slow absorption)
  • Lower doses makes it more amenable to alternative routes of administration (e.g. sublingual). This may be especially important for nausea/vomiting.
